4 Reasons You Might Neglect Your Pet when Dealing with Caregiver Stress

Family Caregiver Tips in Coconut Creek FL

Stress can overwhelm just about anyone. When it comes to caregiver stress, the vast majority of people who deal with this particular type of stress are family members. There are an estimated 44 Family-Caregiver-Tips-Coconut-Creek-FLmillion family caregivers working in the United States at the moment, according to the AARP. Some estimates place that number well over 52 million.

When people are under an extreme amount of stress, it can affect many other aspects of their life, including their full-time job, relationships, and more. If the caregiver has a pet at home, it’s going to require proper care, but caregiver stress can get in the way. September is AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Month and here are four reasons why you, as a family caregiver, might actually be neglecting your beloved furry friend.

Reason #1: You assume he’s just fine.

You’ve had this dog for many years and you know he has been more than fine when you head off to work. In truth, your dog could be suffering from a significant level of anxiety when you’re not there. The longer you have to stay away, especially if you have to go to your full-time job and then over to the elderly individual’s house, that’s placing increased pressure on your beloved pet.

Reason #2: Your dog is not getting enough exercise.

Even if you have a small dog, it needs to get outside and run around. If you’re not taking him for a walk, just going outside on a short run isn’t enough exercise for that animal.

Reason #3: The dog may be at increased risk of developing kidney or bladder problems.

Your dog is loyal and faithful, meaning he’s not going to relieve himself in the house if he can help it at all. If you’ve ever had to ‘hold it’ for an extended period of time, you know how uncomfortable and even painful this can be. For a dog, that can lead to kidney problems and even bladder issues.

Reason #4: Your dog misses you.

Your dog requires companionship. The more often it is left alone, the lonelier it can be. This can affect its ability to be content and comfortable on its own. It’s important to be a responsible dog owner and understand your life as a family caregiver may be affecting it more than you know.

This month, take some time to evaluate the situation and, if you realize you’re not being as responsible of a dog owner as you could or should be, take steps to improve the situation. One of best steps you can take that will also reduce the caregiver stress you feel is to hire a home care aide to help take care of your elderly loved one.
