Sign #1: You’re getting frustrated too easily.

If you have a tendency to be a calm and reasonable individual yet your short tempered and get frustrated more easily now, it could be the result of caregiver stress. If you notice that pattern developing, pay attention to it.

Sign #2: Your friends are no longer returning your calls.

If your friends whom you haven’t seen in a while and haven’t been returning their calls, when you finally reach out to them they may not be willing to reciprocate. It can certainly become frustrating constantly reaching out to somebody who doesn’t seem to show an interest in reaching back to you.

Sign #3: You’re not eating properly.

The busier people are, the more likely they pick up frozen meals, processed foods, and even fast food. That’s not getting them the proper level of nutrition they need. This can actually exacerbate the stress you experience on a regular basis. If you don’t have time to make healthy meals, you need to find an opportunity to at least give yourself enough time for this important aspect of your life.

You may be able to make a healthy meal at the senior’s house and sit down and have lunch or dinner with them, which can solve that particular problem.

Sign #4: You’ve given up hobbies that were important to you.

If you enjoy music and play the piano, for example, you might not have played in quite some time. If that’s the case and you wish you had extra time, encourage your elderly loved one to rely on a home care aide for a few hours a day.

That should give you the opportunity to pursue those hobbies that are important to you.

Sign #5: You can’t sleep at night.

If you have difficulty sleeping at night, it could be the direct result of caregiver stress. If you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night, then it’s time to seriously reevaluate your role as a family caregiver.
