It’s not always easy trying to determine when certain levels of help and support are necessary. When an aging or disabled family member requires assistance, does that mean it’s time to hire a home care aide or is family enough?
This is an important question to consider.
After all, when somebody needs help around the house, there may be a number of family members living in the area who can help. That doesn’t mean it’s the right option, though. There are plenty of home care options available, so this may be a better choice for the senior or disabled adult moving forward.
So how do we determine when it’s time to look into home care options?
One of the best things to do is sit down and have an honest discussion with the senior. The elderly person has every right to determine the course of his or her life. They also have the right to determine whether they rely on home care support or not.
Talk about observations. Let the senior know that the struggles they’re going through have been noticed. Some people try to cover up their own challenges because they don’t want to lose independence.
There are numerous myths and misconceptions about home care support services.
Some of those include the idea that hiring a home care aide or other provider means a loss of independence. That is simply not the case. Quality home care support options provide people the ability to remain as independent as they want to be, but with the physical assistance that may be required to help with any number of tasks throughout the day.
The senior has every right to determine if they receive support.
If an elderly person does not want to hire a home care aide, it should not be forced upon them. However, the more they learn about these services, the more information that’s provided, the more likely they will come to the realization that this would be something important for them, not just in the short-term, but the long-term as well.
If somebody has difficulty getting out of bed and relies on assistance, if a person is unsteady on their feet, if they constantly call on friends and family for help with a variety of tasks on a regular basis, especially daily, then those are good indicators that home care is an important option to consider at this point in their life.
